When the leader of your first-ever wood-firing coming up in early November says “we can fit what you've already made and we’ve got some extra space so you can make some big pieces if you want” you say “how big (of a piece can I fit in my friends’ kilns to bisque)?” and get to it ASAP. I’ll be at the NC State Farmers Market this weekend, though obviously without the pieces destined for the wood-firing.... but there will be mystery pots... As for the big builds, I had already finished my planned amount of cone 10 clay, so I ran out to @ceramica.studioandsupplies , bought a couple new-to-me clays on their helpful advice, and came home with 175lbs to play with. This one started at 75lbs and I’ve trimmed 25lbs so far. Debating textures, but only after it settles. My previous largest pieces have been 10-12in high, but this one clocks in just under 20in. Almost all the other monsters were each carved from a single, fresh bag of clay, but this is three bags built into one piece. Will it dry quickly enough to survive bisque? Will I be able to transport it safely? Will I ignore other things I'm supposed to be doing to make make more? Will I remember to take a process video if I do? Ready for @NCFolkFestival here in Greensboro, NC, September 18-20. I’m in the Makers Marketplace Courtyard. Enter via Hughes St, near the west side of the intersection with Church St. Rain or shine, we're open. (Just not for lightning.) I enjoy these festivals in part because I learn about new-to-me music and meet / catch up with fellow creators. I don't necessarily recognize artists / musicians on sight (so as much as their creations), but to be fair, most people don't recognize particular potters, either. Even though I rarely experience any performances live during the events, I often explore their music afterwards.
